
The Netherlands have had Water Boards from as early on as the thirteenth century. These governmental bodies have a vital and indispensable task: the protection of people, animals and plants against flooding, as well as providing sufficient surface water of good quality.
Water Boards are independent and have their own areas of authority. They can draw up regulations and they levy taxes. Their responsibilities cover a lot more than just laying dykes and building pumping stations. Water Boards are now much more closely involved in land use, planning, nature conservation, protection of the environment, recreation etc. Water Boards draw up long term water plans.
The Water Board Amstel, Gooi and Vecht (AGV) is one of these bodies. In fact, it is one of the largest Water Boards in the Netherlands, working around the Amsterdam area. AGV has the following tasks:
